Book sculpture

Local artist Alma Petry helps unload her sculpture at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts on Friday with the help of staff. The sculpture, of a book and created out of paper, is named for a quote from Alice in Wonderland, "for it might end, you know," said Alice to herself, "in my going out altogether, like a candle. I wonder what I should be like then." The sculpture is on display as part of the exhibit, Brave New World: The Art of the Book in the Digital Age. "It's my take on books," Petry said. "Is the book itself important or the information inside? To me, the important thing is the information." Petry said she hopes the sculpture will provoke thought, emotion and conversation. The weather will be allowed to damage the sculpture and it will be burned as part of a sculpture extinguishing on May 30. The art also contains a second Alice quote, "What's the use of a book with thought, pictures and conversation?"
