The Mt. Vernon Fire Department was called to the Country Cooking Restaurant and truck stop on Broadway at 10:51 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving several reports of smoke coming from the area of the main entrance. According to Mt. Vernon Fire Department Assistant Chief Kevin Sargent, the fire was contained to the roof over the entrance and did not get inside the building, where many patrons and staff were located at the time the fire broke out. “We got a good stop on it before it got to the main roof area of the building,” Sargent said. “It's too early to tell for sure but we believe it was electrical or look at the possibility of a lightening strike due to the strong storms in the area at the time.” Those inside the building were evacuated without incident. By early Sunday afternoon, the regional manager of the facility and the health department were expected to inspect the building before deciding on when it could be reopened.
