MT. VERNON — There’s a place for traditional Western medicine and a place for alternative treatments, a local doctor says.
And in this case, they’re in the same place.
Wise Health Solutions, Ltd., which recently opened at 329 Broadway, combines the practices of Dr. Kristen M. Jacobs, a family physician, and Dr. Robert L. Wise, a chiropractor.
Wise and Jacobs, who are husband and wife, moved to Mt. Vernon in 2002 from Wise’s hometown of Springfield. They had been practicing out of separate offices but “always knew they wanted to integrate their practices and are excited about the opportunity to bring a new approach to medicine to the community,” they say.
That approach combines the talents of Wise and Jacobs.
Wise specializes in pain management “without medication or surgery,” according to information from Wise Health Solutions. He is certified in acupuncture, and he performs auriculotherapy  — stimulation of the external ear’s auricle to alleviate health conditions in other parts of the body — for smoking cessation and weight loss.
Jacobs specializes in preventive medicine, women’s and children’s health, and anti-aging skin care, according to the news release.
Their services also include nutritional counseling, weight management, exercise recommendations, massage therapy and yoga.
Calling it “a unique holistic approach,” Wise and Jacobs say they believe that “integrating their practice styles and looking at the patient as a whole to provide the best care possible is the key to better health.”
“You get a better feeling when you look at all aspects of their life instead of just what they came to the clinic for,” Jacobs said.
“A lot of people go to the doctor for pain,” Wise added, “and a lot of family practices don’t like to deal with that so much.”
It’s also, in essence, a one-stop approach to health care — more convenient for the patient, and more convenient for Wise and Jacobs as well, he said.
“It’s better coordination of care,” Jacobs said.
After extensive renovation to the building — “It was gutted to the studs,” Jacobs said — Wise Health Solutions opened last fall, around the end of October.
“We enjoy spending much-deserved time with patients, so we created a serene environment that is not like your typical physician’s office,” Jacobs said. “We wanted patients to feel relaxed and not feel rushed.”
She and her husband like their new facility’s downtown location, Jacobs said.
“I felt like it would help build the downtown,” she said.
