Local business featured in national magazine

MT. VERNON — Kathy Lemay is ready for the holiday season and full of good cheer. Following a feature in a national magazine, The Olde Homestead, which Lemay owns, recently held its third open house of the year, “An Olde Fashioned Country Christmas.”

“One of the owners of the magazine lives in Missouri, and the other lives in Kentucky,” Lemay said of how the feature in Mercantile Gatherings Magazine came about. “And [the latter] was just traveling through and she stopped by and came in the store and said we need to do a feature.

“A couple months later, I received an e-mail and they asked for pictures and it went from there. It was about a year in the making, from start to finish.”

The Olde Homestead was featured in the Summer 2008 edition of Mercantile Gatherings, which Lemay credits to the her hard work of that of staff.

“I felt honored,” she said, “and that all our hard work paid off. We were recognized in a national magazine and it has worked wonders. It has been fabulous.”

Lemay opened up her primitive store nine years ago in the back of her house. After a few years, she moved her business to the downtown area and, three years ago, moved to The Olde Homestead’s present location at 53 West Crownview.

Decorated as an old homestead, Lemay’s business features a kitchen area, a parlor, gathering room, keeping room, hearth room and a bedroom.
