Musically Speaking: Local songwriters “We Will Stand’ receiving air time

MT. VERNON — Last Sunday evening, you may have heard the show with music from the CD, “We Are Your People Live.” The album was recorded by the singers and musicians from Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

This weekend, I’ll have Jon Henninger on the program. Henninger, among many other things, was the driving force behind the recording of the disc.

But wait, there’s more!

After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Henninger wrote a song entitled “We Will Stand.” However, the song was not recorded until June 2010. Henninger began by promoting the new recording on his own, but over the last few months, he’s gotten some help.

Fox Sports used the song for a special television broadcast, as well as a video on their Web site. “We Will Stand” has been used by the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The song has also been added to the playlists of several country, Christian and adult-contemporary radio stations and on a few Internet radio stations. WIBV is among those radio stations.

On Sept. 11, 2010, Henninger was invited to perform the song live at the Washington Monument in our nation’s capitol.

Henninger recently received the “Patriot Award” from the Illinois National Guard, due to the support the song has received from U.S. troops abroad.

Readers of this space over the last few years have read about legendary Southern Illinois band, Farm. Mike Young, Farm’s drummer, also plays regularly in the Praise Band at Central and is complimentary of Henninger’s work.

“Jon is not only a talented musician but is very savvy on the technological and production side of things as well,” said Young. “While I would say he is somewhat of a perfectionist, he also is very supportive and forgiving when things don’t quite go as well as planned.”

Young said that having people skills like Henninger’s are just part of who he is.

“All of his talents combined are unique, but necessary, for a person in his position and wearing the many hats he does. There are many musicians at Central with varying styles,” Young said. “But Jon handles them all, just as a successful coach in sports would, to get the most out of each individual. This is what makes Jon the outstanding leader that he is and so well respected.”

This Sunday evening, you’ll be able to hear “We Will Stand,” as well as Henninger himself talk about the making of the tune and the recording of “We Are Your People Live” on Musically Speaking. We’ll also play the final three songs from the album on the show.

And then there’s Big Al.
