Musically Speaking: Back with a vengeance

CNHI

MT. VERNON — After experiencing an ever-so-slight bump in the road, Musically Speaking (both the Register-News column, as well as the show itself) returns this weekend with a vengeance.

At the onset, I want you to know that the show itself returns this Sunday evening as an Internet-only program.

If this were even five years ago I most likely wouldn’t be writing this, but, since I started putting the shows on the web site at about this time in 2010, there are many more people telling me that they have listened on the Web as opposed to those who say that they were listening on terrestrial radio.

There is no way to truly gauge the number of Sunday night Musically Speaking radio listeners, since Arbitron (a national ratings provider) doesn’t do weekends. What actually is a weekend? Again, I digress.

I know that there are listeners out there who have even gone as far as downloading shows to their individual portable listening devices in order to take Musically Speaking with them while they are on the go.

Owners of commercial broadcast radio facilities don’t like to hear this kind of stuff, but the truth is that audio now available on the Internet rivals the quality of any over-the-air broadcast transmission. I attribute that to the exponential advances in both software and hardware technology over these last few years.

To those of you who were regular radio listeners on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m., I apologize for the inconvenience that this causes you, but I invite you to listen to the program on the Web site. Even for those who have little technical savvy, it’s very easy to hear any show on the Internet.

Just simply go to the web-site, click on “MS Archived Programs” and follow the directions.

The easiest way to hear a show is to choose the “Yahoo Media Player” option, because instead of downloading the entire show to your computer, you will simply be playing the show directly off of the Mt. Vernon Net (shameless plug) server.

Just click the “Play” button, located next to each of the shows listed, and you’ll hear that program in it’s entirety.

I hope that you’ll give it a try.

Enjoy this weeks Internet-radio show, and please be careful out there.

Don’t drink and drive or text and drive.

The Illinois State Police are counting on it.
