INA — Twenty local individuals took home their General Educational Development certificates at a June 2 ceremony at the Rend Lake College Theater.

Joined by their families and friends, they were conferred their certificates by Regional Superintendent of Schools Bryan Cross at the ceremony, emceed and co-organized by RLC Director of Adult Education and Literacy Christina Hutcheson. This was RLC’s 33rd GED recognition ceremony.

The recipients during RLC’s 33rd GED recognition ceremony were Jessica Vickers (Dahlgren), Tyler Williams (Mt. Vernon), Andrew Vaughan (Woodlawn), Alicia Fulton (McLeansboro), Sarah Carter (Bonnie), Tiffany Carroll (Benton), Daniel Dunn (Mt. Vernon), Haley Moore (Mt. Dr. Sue Tomlin, a retired RLC professor of sociology, who earned her doctorate in the field from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, was the keynote speaker. Tomlin applauded those in the group for reaching their aspirations and encouraged them to continue their quality of character. She illustrated her point with examples of what she sees as pillars of character, the three Cs: Commitment, compassion and courage. She shared a quote of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

“I’m quoting him loosely,” Tomlin said. “It’s not what’s behind you and not what’s in front of you that matters. It’s what is inside of you that truly matters.”

Also at the ceremony, 10 individuals were inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society. They include Carter, Dunn, Henson, Presswood, Rowe, Smith, Fulton, Gehrig, Alan Fox of Tamaroa and Laci Palmer of DuQuoin. The inductees were introduced by their instructors in the adult education program. Instructors this year are Julie Berry, Tracy Boss, Robert Brown, Janet Busby, Gary Davenport, Judy Kelly, Kim Leitz, Jonah McReynolds, Sarah Monteith, and Anita Nenonen. Adult Education and Literacy staff at RLC include Hutcheson, Vickie Golliher and Bobbi Shadowens.
