This week’s Yard of the Week reflects the low country of South Carolina, where the family of Charlie York first settled. York’s residence, in the 1400 block of North Street, not only embodies the indigenous plants of South Carolina, but also the landscape. In the front yard, York has designed a beach setting complete with sand brought back from South Carolina “in Wal-Mart bags,” according to his wife Judii, as well as driftwood and sea oats. Wisteria, crepe myrtle and monkey grass has also been planted by York in order to “paint a picture with plants of the love in his heart.” The Yorks have lived at their current address for 40 years and travel to South Carolina four times a year, Judii said. “He always comes up with different ideas. He carefully studies the plants and what’s indigenous to South Carolina,” she said.
