Spring is here! Well, not really. But the recent climb of mercury in area thermometers is encouragement that it will soon arrive. Get out and enjoy the weather this weekend, but don't forget to set your clocks forward an hour before going to bed Saturday night.
Focus has come and gone here at the Register-News for another year. Vanessa Welch took on pretty large workload to help us get this year's three-section out and she is to be commended for her effort. Likewise, Tesa and Kandace both worked tirelessly down the stretch to get the edition complete. In hindsight, I really like the idea of spotlighting those who volunteer of their time and effort for the benefit of others. Tesa and I had talked regularly about doing a weeklong series on volunteers, but couldn't manage to shrink all of the ideas for the stories into a single week's package. So Focus was a natural fit for such an expansive list. We did not hit every single volunteer and group, but we did try to provide diversity in the package. We have received positive feedback on the project.
Wednesday's loss at Carbondale marked the end of the season for the Mt. Vernon boys basketball team and head coach Scott Gamber. The Rams finished with a record of 18-9 and exceeded many of the expectations set for them despite Wednesday's disappointing upset loss. I asked Gamber at the beginning of the season what he felt the most applicable attribute of his team would be and he told me it would be a fun group to watch. He was right; this year's group was very entertaining and Gamber deserves credit for keeping it together and winning while also providing a fun atmosphere for his players. It was a nice first year for the coach.
