Pre-March Madness

I just want to point out that Tesa and I (without consulting each other even!) wore orange today to support the Mt. Vernon Rams and wish them luck in their regional final game against the Centralia Orphans. I feel I must also add out that our esteemed leader here at the Register-News, Big Hall, wore a plum-colored shirt.

But seriously, we wish the team all the best of luck against their rivals. It seems appropriate that this game occurs on this leap year day, with the sun shining brightly overhead and warm temperatures outside adding a "spring" to one's step. And if you haven't been outside, once you do, you'll be wanting to be spending the rest of your day out there.

In the meantime, I'm finally taking time to write my first blog entry. I meant to get one started weeks ago, but there's always been something more important to do for the public that has taken precedence. I'm going to try to take more time to get my voice out to you more often, whether it's just to rant about Big Hall's silly pranks or telling someone's story. The point is all of us, here in Mt. Vernon and the surrounding community are united by a number of facets within the area, whether it's news, sports, schools, business or organizations. It's our job here at the Register-News to not only report the news, but to share stories of our neighbors. I've really enjoyed doing that. I hope the community continues to let us know about their stories so we can continue to share.

Time changes next weekend. Can you believe it? In today's paper I wrote about being ready for spring. I'm to the point where I'm sick of seeing sludge and mud and slush and gray skies. As I said in my column, I ready for warmer temperatures and outdoor activities. I thought about calling Jim Rasor and just asking, 'OK, when the heck is this stuff gonna end?' But Jim's a nice guy and doesn't need to listen to my ramblings. However, my tulips have been up since before the first ice storm and I ready for some color and leaves, which I'm sure many others are as well. Bring it on, Spring.

So this first entry may not be quite that long, but give me time. But I hope if we've done one thing up here at the newspaper is to prove that we are the local paper for the community.

We Are Mt. Vernon.
