Crossroads outreach holds luncheon

Healthy Woman, a Crossroads Community Hospital community outreach program, held an educational luncheon at Times Square Mall in Mt. Vernon this week.

Dr. Syed, neurologist, discussed the “A, B, ZZZZZ’s of Sleep” to 50 attendees. Members where treated to potato soup, sandwiches, fruit and dip prior to the presentation. Jennifer Ice, respiratory therapy director, had a booth with sleep disorder information, a sleep quiz and a video presentation. Community partner Calvin Murphy with Allied Radon also had a booth about radon safety and precautions to take in your home to protect yourself and your family.

Syed’s presentation included information about ailments that can be brought on or worsened from sleep disorders such as heart disease. Syed said more physicians and specialists are realizing the important role sleep plays in overall health.

“You spend half of your life sleeping,” Syed said. “You go to the doctor for problems you have when you are awake, but people don’t come when they are having sleep problems as much, but they need to.”

Following Syed’s presentation, there was a question and answer period and a pajama fashion show with models donning attire from Peeble’s and Maurices.
