Quiznos expected to open Friday in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON — Quiznos, located at 4805 Broadway, will open its doors to customers on Friday, according to owner John Shields.
The store will offer toasted made-to-order subs and other menu items including a selection of fresh salads, soups and specialty desserts.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in the opening of the restaurant,” said Shields. “Some people have tasted a Quiznos sub before and are now hooked. Others have heard of us and are anxious to see what we’re all about.”
As reported earlier in the Register-News, Shields and his wife, Rebecca, are not strangers to running a business. The Bluford couple have managed businesses before and are looking forward to the opening of their new business.
The Shieldses began the process of opening the restaurant by obtaining a small business loan. According to John Shields, there is a net worth criteria that has to be met before Quiznos will sell a franchise to prospective proprietors. “Peoples Bank was real helpful. We had opportunities to go outside of Mt. Vernon [for financing], but we felt you should be loyal to the local people that will be supporting you,” he said previously, adding that Jefferson County Development Corporation executive director Mary Ellen Bechtel was helpful in helping them chose a location for their franchise.
And Shields believes his restaurant will be an asset to the community. “It will give them an alternative to foods available [here]. We toast our sandwiches that are ran through an oven, and that separates us from other restaurants available.”
According to information by Quiznos, the business began in 1981 at 13th and Grant in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, and by 2000 there were more than 1,000 restaurants. Entrepreneur ranked Quiznos No. 2 in the top 10 franchises of 2005.
The chain now has more than 3,000 restaurants worldwide.
Hours of operation for Quiznos are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Customers can dine in at the restaurant, information from Shields states. For take-out orders, customers may call 244-QUIZ (7849) or send orders via fax to 244-6992. Catering trays for corporate, home or office parties are available also.
