MT. VERNON — Carl D. Miller, Cynthia Davis and Kimberly Alvis will be the three new members of the Mt. Vernon Township High School Board.

Miller received 2,152 votes in Tuesday’s election; with Davis receiving 1,616 votes and Alvis garnering 1,405 votes.

Miller is a retired educator who taught for six years at Opdyke-Belle Rive Grade School and 27 years at Summersville Grade School. He has been serving on the Rome Grade School Board from 1997 to present. The highlight of his career was being chosen the 1995 Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year.

He has said that challenges faced by the MVTHS board include inadequate and unreliable funding sources, low test scores, apathy and an aging facility.

“When students graduate from Mt. Vernon Township High School, they must be prepared to face their future,” Miller previously said.

Davis is a former employee of MVTHS, serving as a study hall aide and attendance office clerk. She has stated she is “very passionate regarding the education of today’s youth and being aware of the economic downfall that we are now facing.”

Alvis has been active within the school and with area youth, including being president of the Gridiron Club.

Three seats were open on the MVTHS Board, with five candidates. Robin Dodd garnered 1,334 votes, and incumbent Ron Copenhaver received 1,302 votes.

“It’s been an honor serving on the board,” Copenhaver said.

In the election for the MVTHS board seats, there were 5,019 under votes and 42 under votes. Miller received 27.56 percent of the vote; Davis 20.69 percent and Alvis 16.67 percent.
