Third-grade students praise their moms with special tea

MT. VERNON — It was Mom’s day Friday afternoon at Dodds Grade School for Linda Walker’s third-grade classroom, as they were honored by their children with a number of special gifts during a Mom’s Tea.

Moms were presented with hats and a PowerPoint presentation by students describing their mothers. Songs, magic tricks, dances, cheers and a book reading highlighted the special Mother’s Day celebration along with special books made for the mothers.

Trenae Brockhouse and her son Walter read the book “Love You Always,” about a mother who rocks her son to sleep every night, singing a lullaby even as he gets older and is a strange boy with strange clothes and strange music. But when the mother is older and cannot finish her song one night, her son sings it for her, rocking her back and forth as he sang the lullaby. When he returns home, he looks in on his own daughter, and picks her up, continuing his mother’s tradition.

As a group, the class sang “I Believe I Can Fly” and “Angels Among Us,” following which many mothers were wiping tears from their eyes.

When asked what she would change about her mom, Anessa Montgomery smiled wide and said, “Nothing.” MacKenzie Zinzilieta said what made her like her mom best was the way she drove her to practices and “all over the place.” She too, wouldn’t change a thing about her mother.

Mothers and their children finished the remainder of the celebration with cake and Kool-Aid, with a guessing game of “Who said this?”
