MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Jaycees will be holding a Guitar Hero bracketed tournament on May 31 at the Granada Theater in downtown Mt. Vernon.
According to information from the organization, registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. and the competition will begin at 10 a.m. Registrants can enter in the category appropriate to their talent level with a maximum of 64 entrants per category. The categories and the fees are Easy for $5, Medium for $7.50, Hard for $10 and Expert for $12.50. Admission to the event will cost $2 and benefits the Granada Center for the Performing Arts. Prizes will vary according to difficulty and depend upon participation.
Guitarists will perform one song each in head-to-head competition and be judged by a team of three judges.
Refreshments will be served during the competition.
"Anyone can participate," said Chris Murphy, event chairman. "There are so many talented guitarists and scoring these winners is going to be a challenge. Luckily, the game will take care of that aspect for our judges"
Granada Center for the Performing Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the Granada Theater in downtown Mt. Vernon. Membership in this group is open to everyone. The facility is currently being used for special events, fund-raisers and is available for rental.
The Mt. Vernon chapter of the Jaycees was chartered over 60 years ago and is one of the over 3,000 local chapters throughout Illinois. Illinois has the second largest number of Jaycees of any state in the United States.
The Jaycees provide individuals between the age of 21 and 40 the opportunity to develop personal, management and leadership skills while serving their community.
The Mt. Vernon Jaycees chapter holds their monthly general meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Old Train Depot in Mt. Vernon on Route 15 East at 100 North Second Street.
