Foundation meets goal for new lab at MVTHS

MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Township High School Foundation has met its $28,000 goal to purchase a state-of-the-art mobile science lab for the school.

“We’re excited,” MVTHS Foundation member Kari Sipe said. “We’ll be ordering the labs, and they’ll be ready to use next year.”

The foundation, which was started four years ago, works to supplement learning opportunities at the high school and reach as many students as possible while working within goals set by the district. In addition, one of the foundation goals is to promote student achievement in academics and support programs that aren’t sufficiently funded through tax money or regular revenue sources received by the district.

Other projects undertaken by the foundation include the wireless Internet project, which allows students and teachers to use the Internet; the purchase of SmartBoards for use in classrooms; and classroom grants for teachers to purchase supplies and help students.

The mobile science labs will be able to be moved from classroom to classroom to accommodate teaching many science subjects.

The mobile lab will have 15 laptop computers, software, sensor probes, digital microscopes, a scope cam, a dry ice machine and gel electrophoresis apparati.

Sipe said the largest portion of the foundation’s goal was raised during its golf outing last week — which brought in $19,000.

The foundation began raising funds for the mobile science lab in November.
