Summer Music Series heats up July 25

MT. VERNON — The first outdoor music program for the City Parks and Recreation Department will be held at 7 p.m. on July 25.

“We’ve been looking for more activities that involve the whole family,” recreation coordinator Wes Plummer said. “So many times the family is broken apart with girls softball at one location, boys baseball at another and adult activities in yet another area. This is something the family can do together.”

The concert is part of the new Family Adventure Series, which includes the Movie at the Park and the Arbor Day Festival.

The first Summer Music Series gets underway at 7 p.m. on July 25 at the band shell at Veterans Park. During the concert, the West Salem Trinity United Methodist Church Praise Team will be performing a wide range of contemporary and traditional gospel music. The team consists of Pastor Brad Henson, Goldie Gholson, Mark Sheets, Randy Knox, Greg Brown, Johnny Craps, Dustin Gholson, Wes Lampp, Lindsey Downen and Charles Westman. The group has performed at many church revivals, picnics, weddings and camps throughout the area in addition to its normal Sunday morning worship performances.

“We’re at the end of many of the summer programs and we thought the music series would be a good thing for the family before school gets going again,” Plummer said.

Plummer stressed the events are free to the public and those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. In addition, families can bring in snacks and treats to enjoy during the performances.

The second installment of the Summer Music Series will be held on Aug. 29 with Randall Atkinson and his E-Z Jazz Band, which will also be held at the band shell at Veterans Park.
