Man injured in accident on Interstate 57

BONNIE — A Florida man received major injuries following a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon on Interstate 57 near mile marker 87.

Christopher Jansen, 24, was traveling in the northbound lane at 4:57 p.m. when he had some type of tire problem and lost control of his car, information from the Illinois State Police stated. Jansen then went through the crossover median and went into the southbound lane and was struck by a semi tractor trailer driven by Heather B. Elkins, 44, of Stanton, Ky.

Elkins and her passenger, Tommy Elkins, 44, also of Stanton, Ky., did not receive injuries. Jansen and Heather Elkins were wearing seat belts, the ISP stated, however Tommy Elkins was not wearing a seat belt and was in the semi’s sleeper cab.

Jansen was transported to St. Louis University for treatment. Arrests are pending, the ISP reported.

This was the second accident on I/57 Monday. Earlier, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 12:45 p.m. regarding an accident involving three vehicles. According to telecommunications logs, a semi truck reportedly hit a utility vehicle in the southbound lane near mile marker 92. Two injuries were reported, according to logs, and one person was transported to Crossroads Community Hospital. Both the northbound and southbound lanes were shut down as a result of the accident, information stated, and officials left the scene at approximately 4 p.m.
