MVTHS Homecoming festivities kick off Oct. 14

MT. VERNON —It’s a Night on the Nile for students for this year’s 2008 Mt. Vernon Township High School Homecoming Dance. This year’s theme is Egyptian Madness and will kick off Oct. 14 with a Homecoming Coffeehouse in Room 119H at MVTHS from 7 to 9 p.m.
Movie Night will be Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Granada Theatre from 6:30 to 9 p.m. with a presentation of “The Mummy.” The annual Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 beginning at 2:10 p.m. and will follow the same route as in the past, from the high school campus to the square downtown and back to the high school.
On Friday, Oct. 17 a Homecoming assembly will be held from 9:35 to 10:30 a.m. in E gym at MVTHS. The Homecoming football game will be held that night, with members of the Homecoming Court introduced at half-time.
The Homecoming Dance will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. in E gym with the coronation ceremony at 10 p.m. Spectator admission to coronation is $2, of which will be split between MVTHS student council and a charity.
Homecoming Queen candidates are:
Leamber Broady, daughter of John and Donna Broady. She will be escorted by Doug Suits, son of Paul and Linda Suits. Leamber is active in volleyball, National Honor Society and fundraising for the American Cancer Society. She would like to attend Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and earn a bachelor’s degree in business as well as play college volleyball.
Talia Campbell is the daughter of Cary and Sheri Campbell. She will be escorted by Jacob Alvis, son of Greg and Kim Alvis. Talia is active in dancing, golf and Sub Debs and enjoys hanging out with her friends. She plans to attend a university after high school, possibly in business.
Ashley Dunn is the daughter of Tim and Denise Dunn. She will be escorted by Jake Sledge, son of Mark Sledge and Tracy Horton. Ashley is active in tumbling, is a fourth year football and basketball cheerleader, a member of HOSA and enjoys hanging out with the girls. After she graduates she plans to attend Rend Lake College for a year and then transfer to the University of Miami to attend nursing school. She would like to eventually become a surgical nurse.
Kashira Hawkins is the daughter of Shakira Williams and Antonio Williams. Her escort will be Robbie Wilke, son of Robert and Debra Wilke. Kashira is a member of HOSA and the MVTHS Marching Rams Band. She plans to work this summer and in the fall attend Rend Lake College in the nursing program. She hopes to become a registered nurse.
Kourtnie Hughes is the daughter of Holly Pierce and Billy Hughes. Her escort will be Shane Thomas, grandson of Frank and Anita Huston. Kourtnie is a member of HOSA and enjoys hanging out with the girls. She plans to attend the nursing program at Rend Lake College to become an OB nurse and would like to get married and have kids.
Leah Minor is the daughter of Jeff and Trish Minor. She will be escorted by Mike Phillips, grandson of George and Kathleen Shook. Leah is a member of the Thespian Society, Children’s Theater, Operetta, National Honor Society, Jazz Choir, Youth and Government, is the editor-in-chief of Vernois News, a member of A Cappella Choir and St. Mary’s High School Choir. She plans to attend St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
Alecia Zinke is the daughter of Tonya Zinke and Bill Zinke. She will be escorted by Jon Moffit, son of Mark and Rhonda Moffitt. Alecia is active in football and basketball cheerleading and Sub Debs. She would like to attend Southern Illinois University at Carbondale after graduation.
Homecoming King candidates are:
Kyle Martin, son of Curtis and Michele Martin. He will be escorted by Rylie Bruce, daughter of Jana and Michael Bratcher. Kyle is active in basketball, National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He plans to attend Rend Lake College or Greenville College after graduation.
Darrell Mitchell is the son of Marlo Mitchell and Darrell Mitchell. He will be escorted by Jordan Starr, daughter of Angela Litton. Darrell is active in football and basketball. He plans to go to college after graduation and hopefully play football.
Quinton Sledge is the son of Terry and Sarah Sledge He will be escorted by Courtney Lawrence, daughter of Mike and Aletta Lawrence. He is active in Theatre for Kids, Operetta, Thespian Society, is a drum major of the Marching Rams Pep Band, art editor of the blue print in the Vernois News and is a member of Jazz and A Cappella Choir. He is employed at Pizza Hut and enjoys playing in his band, Hen Ma and the Camaros. He plans to go to college but would like to see the world first. He states he and his dad are going to travel throughout Europe after he graduates, even though “dad just doesn’t know it yet.” He hopes to major in theater, but is currently torn between colleges. Whatever college he chooses, he would love to study abroad in the theaters of London.
Joe Sweeney is the son of Sharon Springer and Kevin Sweeney. He will be escorted by Allyssa Thompson, daughter of Scott Thompson and Lesa Crawford. He is active in soccer and enjoys hanging with friends and playing pong. He plans to attend college after graduation and marry Allyssa Thompson.
Shane Thomas is the grandson of Frank and Anita Huston. His escort is Kourtnie Hughes, daughter of Holly Pierce and Billy Hughes. He enjoys deer hunting, four-wheeler riding and racing race cars. He plans to go into the plumbing industry after graduation.
Campbell Walters is the son of David and Stephanie Walters. He is active in cross country, track, National Honor Society, Math Team, Centralia Philharmonic Orchestra and is a member of “Phil’z Harmonik’s,” a Suzuki String group. He plans to attend a four-year college, possibly studying accounting.
Sean Wiegel is the son of Chris and Rhonda Wiegel. He will be escorted by Brooke Hover, daughter of Jan and Lee Hover. He enjoys playing football, hanging with friends, laughing and having fun. He plans to go to college after graduation and “get my life rolling.”
