Council to hear sewer plant quotes

MT. VERNON — The City Council will hear results of financial quotes for the sewer plant improvements tonight, as well as hold several second readings on ordinances which were held over from last month.

According to City Manager Ron Neibert, the sewer improvement project is estimated to cost $869,000, and last month the two financial quotes which were received were rejected because they came in higher than expected.

Neibert told the council last month that he would re-work the bid specification package, and try to get the quotes lower.

The new round of bids are to be opened at 1 p.m. today, and the results reported by Neibert to the council tonight.

Neibert said the city is hoping to get interest rates between 4 and 5 percent, with a five year loan and a 20 year amortization.

Other bid results which will be presented to the council are for Christmas pole decorations. The decorations which have been used in the past have been described as a hodge-podge of styles and types of decorations and if the bids come in low enough, hopes are that new, more uniform decorations can be purchased.

In other business, the council will:

Hear a request for authorization to seek bids for police department ammunition;

Hear a second reading on ordinances to grant conditional use permits to Naves Party Supplies to use two tracts of its property for rental equipment;

Discuss a second reading on an ordinance which would authorize the sale of surplus lots; and

Hold a first reading on an ordinance setting the salary for the office of City Clerk at $32,500 annually and which, if approved, would go into effect beginning the next term of office for the city clerk in May 2009.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building at Veteran’s Park.
