MT. VERNON — Girl Scouts of Shagbark Council have taken the bragging rights in the first Scarecrow Contest, part of the activities surrounding the Southern Illinois Harvest Festival.

Participants from throughout the county were invited to craft a scarecrow, name it, and enter it in the contest, which was judged Wednesday. Twelve individuals and businesses took advantage of the fun to enter. Judging was based on creativity, uniqueness and best use of harvest theme. Vernon Tourism and Honest Abe; Ina Grade School fourth grade class of Idella Robertson and Ina IV; Michelle and Makayla Smith and Army Mom; and The Insurance Store and TIS.
