Candidates file 2010 primary petitions

MT. VERNON — Petitions have been filed for those candidates running in the Feb. 2, 2010 General Primary Election.

There are three county offices which will be on the ballot: County clerk, sheriff and treasurer. Incumbent Democrat Connie Simmons is the sole person who is running for County Clerk; Incumbent Democrat Roger Mulch and Republican Eric K. Breeze are running for Jefferson County Sheriff; and incumbent Republican Debbie Elliott Marlow and Democrat Steve Langa are running for Jefferson County Treasurer.

Seven county board seats are up, in District 1, District 4, District 8, District 9, District 11, District 13 and District 15. In District 1, which includes Grand Prairie, Rome 1 and Rome 2 precincts, incumbent Democrat John C. Riley and Republican Joey McDermott are on the ballot; in District 4, which includes Casner, Shiloh 1 and Shiloh 2 precincts, Democrat Charles McNealy and Robert D. Knutson are on the ballot; for District 8, which includes Mt. Vernon 1 and Mt. Vernon 13 precincts, Democrat incumbent Wayne Hicks will be running; in District 9, which includes Mt. Vernon 2, Mt. Vernon 3 and Mt. Vernon 14 precincts, incumbent Democrat Pat Garrett will be on the ballot as will Republican John D. Keele; in District 11, which includes Mt. Vernon 6, Mt. Vernon 7 and Mt. Vernon 8 precincts, Republican Tommy Hayes will be running and Democrat incumbent Steven J. Damron will be on the ballot. In District 13, which includes Mt. Vernon 11 and Mt. Vernon 12 precincts, incumbent Democrat James Malone is running; and in District 15, which includes Shiloh 4 Precinct, incumbent Democrat Jim Nelson will be on the ballot.

Precinct Committeemen are also up for election during the Primary, and Mt. Vernon 5 has two Democrats and two Republicans vying for the position. Democrat incumbent Larry W. Hicks will be on the ballot against John Scrivner; and Republican incumbent Michael E. Flanagan will be up against Randy Winn. In Shiloh 4, two Republicans are vying for the position of precinct committeemen, Rolland W. Lewis and Douglas R. Hoffman. A lottery for ballot placement between Lewis and Hoffman has been scheduled for 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
