Major damage reported in early morning fire

MT. VERNON — An early morning fire caused major damage to a home in rural Mt. Vernon, and destroyed an attached garage.

Five members of the household were able to escape the fire in the 15000 block of Lynchberg Road — including the howeowner and four children, ranging in ages from 3 to 16. They are currently staying with friends and family members.

Jefferson Fire Protection District received the call shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. The homeowner, Dana Barnum, told fire personnel she heard a popping noise in the garage area. A mini van and motorcycle inside the garage were destroyed in the fire.

Captain Ryan Clinton of the JFPD said the cause and origin of the fire is under investigation, although it is not suspicious in nature.

Some items were to be salvaged in the fire, including clothing, jewelry and photographs. However, all of the Christmas packages were destroyed in the fire, except for one box being stored in the attic.

We'll have more information on the fire in Thursday's print edition of the Register-News.
