Pancake breakfast to be held

MT. VERNON — — The Mt. Vernon Knights of Columbus will host a pancake breakfast to benefit the Lifeboat Alliance.

The breakfast will be held from 6 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the St. Mary Parish Center.

The local Knights of Columbus often hosts events to raise money for the shelter, said Lifeboat Alliance Executive Director Jenny O’Daniel.

“They’ve done fish fries for us, and collections of canned food as well,” she said. “They’re a key supporter of the Lifeboat Alliance. They truly are instrumental, because they serve supper here two nights a week. We appreciate them greatly.”

The Knights are among the groups who volunteer on a regular basis at the shelter, including mowing the yard, O’Daniel added.

Tickets for the pancake breakfast are $5 and are available at the New Life Family Shelter or from any Knights of Columbus member.

The New Life Family Shelter has provided a temporary home for as many as 17 individuals at one time since its Oct. 1 opening, O’Daniel said.

Plans are in place to open the men’s wing of the shelter by Christmas time, she added.

Items are still needed at the shelter, including the “wish list” item of an ice machine, she said.

“You can’t imagine how much ice we go through in a day,” she said. “We could also use another freezer, and trash bags are a huge item we burn through.”

The kitchen is still under construction, but is moving forward, she said; the dishwasher is installed and working, and volunteers and staff are readying to inventory the dishes and silverware to figure out what is still needed. Lone Star Steakhouse gave the shelter a large amount of flatware and plates, bowls and platters when it renovated, O’Daniel said.
