---- — MT. VERNON — Illinois State Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department stayed busy on Sunday, following a winter storm that brought about 4 inches of snow to the region.
Forecasters were correct in their predictions that rainfall would start on Saturday evening, followed by the winter blast on Sunday that started as rain, then turned to sleet, followed by the snowfall.
According to unofficial reports, law enforcement officials responded to 15 traffic accidents on Sunday — nine of them on Interstates 57 and 64 — that meet just north of Mt. Vernon.
The first accident occurred just after 11 a.m. when a car was reported in the median on Interstate 57 at mile post 83. The string of accidents continued until just after 7 p.m. when a motorist struck a sign on the East Divide Road in Bluford.
Here’s a rundown of the reported accidents to ISP and county police, in addition to the two previously mentioned:
n 11:23 a.m. — A car was reported in the median on Interstate 57 at mile post 104;
n 11:30 — A car was in a ditch at Illinois 15 and Wagner;
n 11:34 — A car was in the ditch on Illinois 15, one mile east of Mt. Vernon Airport;
n 11:38 — A truck was in the median on Interstate 57 at mile post 85;
n 11:41 — A minivan needed a tow truck on Interstate 64 at mile post 90;
n 11:50 — A car was up against a wire in the median on Interstate 57 at mile post 102;
n Noon — Police were out with a vehicle down an embankment on Interstate 57 at mile post 101 near Dix;
n 12:06 — A car was reported in the median of Interstate 64 at mile post 64;
n 12:13 — A truck was reportedly on its side on East Freeman Road near Scheller;
n 12:34 — Three to four vehicles were reportedly off the road on Interstate 64 at mile posts 90 to 92;
n 12:52 — A westbound Suzuki hit a tree on Interstate 64 at mile post 84;
n 7:01 — A vehicle was off the road in the 16000 block of East Liberty Road.
There were no reports of police responding to accidents within the Mt. Vernon city limits. No injuries were reported in any of the accidents.
