MT. VERNON — Several projects in the city are completed or nearing completion, as reported by City Projects Manager Nathan McKenna and City Engineer Brad Ruble.
The two updated the council on projects during its meeting on Monday. They reported that among the recently completed projects are the Veterans Memorial Drive/South Davidson extension, the Safe Routes to School sidewalks project, the Conger Street water main replacement, the South 34th Street sewer replacement and the Continental Tire Rail Spur.
McKenna said the Horace Mann demolition project is considered 99 percent complete as some ground work and seeding needs to be done; the city facility energy audit is completed and an application for funds to do the energy savings projects was submitted last week. McKenna said the Ninth Street Streetscape project phase is at about 50 percent complete.
"They are finishing the section from Jordan to Broadway, and they still have to put up street lights for that to be completed," McKenna said. "They have the base poured between Main and Broadway."
The council also approved going out for bid on painting the pedestrian bridge in front of Casey Middle School and the newest water tower at Times Square Mall.
"The designs are recommended by the Branding Leadership Team," City Manager Ron Neibert said. "By placing those designs out for bid we hope to have the bids approved for the first meeting (of the council) in August and have it completed in short order."
In addition, Mayor Mary Jane Chesley said the Illinois Department of Transportation will want a plan for how to deal with traffic on Broadway when the painting commences, and Neibert reported the painting would not interfere with the beginning of school.
In other business, the council:
Approved seeking bids for banking services;
Approved seeking bids for basketball courts at Dawson Park;
Approved seeking bids for the reconstruction of Airport Road;
Approved seeking bids for the demolition of dangerous and dilapidated structures;
Approved the federal prevailing wage rate; and
