MT. VERNON — A Mt. Vernon man is dead following a stabbing incident at the Mt. Vernon Gun and Sportsman's Club in rural Jefferson County, and a man is in custody for the alleged homicide.
The stabbing took place shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday outside the club. The sheriff's department received a call of a fight outside and a possible stabbing, according to a news release.
Eric Houser, 37, was the victim of fatal stab wounds. Houser was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. at Crossroads Community Hospital by Coroner Eddie Joe Marks. Marks had scheduled an autopsy Wednesday afternoon.
Later in the evening, Sammy H. Kehrer, 47, of the 700 block of White Street in Mt. Vernon, was taken into custody. The arrest took place without incident in the 15000 block of North Stone Lane in Jefferson County, authorities reported.
Kehrer was initally charged with aggravated battery. State's Attorney Doug Hoffman confirmed he is reviewing the case and possible murder charges may be filed as early as today.
Houser and Kehrer reportedly were friends and neighbors. A motive for the stabbing has not been established.
The stabbing is under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County State's Attorney's Office, Illinois State Police and the coroner.
