Downtown building tour set

MT. VERNON — This year’s Downtown After 5 Building Tour and Taste of Mt. Vernon event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 17 at the Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge, 1107 Jordan St.

Organizers say interest in the program has continued to grow over time and about 300 or more people are expected to attend this year’s tour.

This is the eighth year for the Building Tour portion of the event and the fourth year for Taste of Mt. Vernon. The annual program is now hosted by the Downtown Mt. Vernon Development Corporation and the Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge #819.

“It’s been very successful for us,” said Cyndy Mitchell, executive director of the DMDC. “It’s to make people aware and to think about the downtown as a destination for events, activities, shopping and business.”

Tickets for the event are $10 per person. The price of the ticket covers a self-guided tour of four renovated downtown buildings, as well as the Taste of Mt. Vernon food sampling at the Elks Lodge.

Each person who buys a ticket will receive a map with information on the four buildings that are part of this year’s tour.

The buildings include RARE Chop House, 224 S. 10th St.; Williamson Asia, 822 Main St.; Studio B, 1112 Broadway, Suite 201; and Lowery’s Irish Pub, 300 S. Ninth St.

“We try to highlight the buildings that were renovated the year before to keep it current,” Mitchell said. “Each year, there’s something new going on.”

At the four building sites, participants will be greeted by a tour guide who will speak about the renovations and be available for questions.

Most ticket-buyers choose to take the tour first and then meet up at the Elks Lodge for the Taste of Mt. Vernon, Mitchell said.

The time frame set aside for the tour is 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., but the overall event lasts until 9 p.m.
