MT. VERNON — Residents may burn leaves from March 1 through April 30.
Leaves may be burned only on private property and not on public right-of-way, public streets nor sidewalks. Fires on blacktop or oiled streets can damage the street surface, as well as create a traffic hazard.
Leaves are defined to include twigs, small branches, nuts and associated debris capable of being burned with leaves.
Burning will be allowed only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Fires must be attended at all times. Please do not rake leaves into ditches and streets, nor burn in ditches, nor on streets.
Midwest Waste will begin waste pickup March 17. There is no limit to the number of bags that will be picked up. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, branches, brush, garden plants, flowers, weeds and other similar organic waste material accumulated as a result of maintenance of laws, shrubbery, trees, vines and gardens. Individual limbs or branches should not exceed 2 inches in diameter. Brush must be bundled, maximum of 35 pounds each, and a maximum of 3 feet in length and 1 foot in diameter. Plastic bags are not allowed.
