Granada Matinee to show kids' film

MT. VERNON — The Granada’s Classic Kids’ Matinee will continue March 8 with a screening of the 2011 3D computer-animated movie, “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

Based on the classic play “Romeo and Juliet,” the British film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt.

It follows the story of two garden gnomes who fall in love despite coming from rival families.

Doors open for the March 8 showing at 1:30 p.m., and the movie begins at 2 p.m. All children who attend must be accompanied by an adult.

The sponsor of this month’s film is MidCountry Bank in Mt. Vernon. Gary Evans, branch manager of the bank, said MidCountry officials

selected “Gnomeo & Juliet” because a bank employee had seen the film and greatly enjoyed it.

“We thought it’d be a fun movie for the kids,” Evans said.

The Granada Center for the Performing Arts hosts the Classic Kids’ Matinee once a month each year from October to May. Admission is free and concessions are available for a modest price.

Prior to the March 8 screening, a drawing will be held for a free kids’ birthday party at the Froggeez family fun center.

Eight films are selected for the matinee each year. The 2013-2014 season has featured a mix of live action and animated movies.

The sponsors for this season have included several local banks and St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital.

Evans said MidCountry has been a sponsor for the last few years, and that the matinee program is a great benefit to the community.

For many children, the Classic Kids’ Matinee is their only chance to experience an old-fashioned good time out at the movies, Evans said.

“It’s nice to have a place for the kids to come (and to) expose them to something they might not always get to do,” Evans said. “They’ve done a great job there at the Granada. We’re just happy to be able to help them out.”

There are two more films left in this season’s Classic Kids’ Matinee. “The Love Bug” will be screened on April 12, and “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” will be shown on May 10.
