Running for a Cause

BLUFORD — The runners/walkers of the Star of Bethlehem 5k race showed determination on Saturday.

The race took place at the New Life Baptist Church, where 14 runners/walkers braved the cold and rainy weather. Funds for the American Cancer Society were raised for the Jefferson County Relay for Life program. The 5k was able to raise $450.

Stacy Hulbert, the captain of the Team Lifesaver, said she was excited about the race and was happy with the turn out.

“More than I expected have shown up today,” Hulbert said.

Participants ranged from young to old from amateur to seasoned runners. Despite the difference of skill levels there was a common bond they all shared. Each participant has been affected by cancer, whether it has been a family member or a friend.

“It has touched all of us one way or another,” said Hulbert.

Sam Wilson, an avid runner, took part in the race in honor of his late aunt Joyce Davis. Wilson said she fought breast

cancer for a long time but passed away 13 years ago. Wilson has run in the past for many charities and was also the event chairman for the Hamilton County Relay for life program.

“It has always had a place in my heart,” Wilson said.

Perseverance was the theme of the day, due to the weather conditions.

“I prefer to run when there is adverse conditions because its more of a challenge. I know that true runners like the ones here today won’t be deterred by these kinds of conditions,” said Robert Hulbert, a veteran runner. “

“Cancer doesn’t stop. It’s all about perseverance and doing something when not everything goes your way and still pushing through to the finish line,” Robert said.

The race started and ended directly behind church and ran east onto Chestnut Street. Runners continued past the Bluford Grade School and onto Sixth Street to Paul Avenue. The course continued south to Ice Plant Road to Louie Street, where runners turned around and ran the course in reverse back to the church to the finish line.
