MT. VERNON — Angie Miller of Texico was in luck Thursday when she came to Maurices in Mt. Vernon to return a shirt she had purchased there as a Christmas gift.
The shirt was the wrong size, but Miller was able to find the right size shirt in the store and make a gift exchange.
“I guess at Christmas sometimes it happens, but I'm glad we're able to exchange,” Miller said. “That works out great.”
Thursday proved to be a popular time for local shoppers to visit stores to return Christmas gifts or exchange them.
Their reasons for doing so varied. Size was the main issue for some, but for others the gift was a duplicate or did not work correctly.
“It's typically like the first week after Christmas is where we see the most traffic for returns and exchanges, but also because we have such good sales after Christmas, too,” said Destinee Rendon, store manager of Maurices. “It's usually a size issue.”
The Kohl's store, in particular, had a steady stream of customers coming in Thursday, seeking to return or exchange items.
Ashley Snow of Bluford was at the store that day to return a toy smart phone she had bought as a gift for her 20-month-old son, Brett.
It turns out another relative had bought the same gift for Brett, Ashley said. Ashley decided to return the one she bought because the other one had been purchased from Amazon.
“So that one's a little harder to return,” Ashley said of the Amazon gift. “Sometimes you get duplicates. It's happened more than once.”
Shala Ilbery of Mt. Vernon came to Kohl's Thursday to exchange a KitchenAid mixer attachment that had been given to her for Christmas. The gift turned out to be for the wrong kind of mixer, but Ilbery exchanged it for the correct attachment.
