MT. VERNON — Mt. Vernon Police have arrested several individuals involved in two weekend burglaries.
In both burglaries, the help of citizens helped lead to the arrests.
Four people were arrested in connection with a burglary just before 11 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of South 18th Street. A television was taken in that heist, and recovered by police, following a traffic stop of a vehicle on 23rd Street.
Arrested and charged with residential burglary were: Tyler Rector, 17, of the 1800 block of Lamar Avenue; Dominic Harris, 18, of the 1800 block of Lamar Avenue; and Marty McCluskey, 19, of the 1000 block of South 13th Street. A fourth man, 29-year-old Alan Fleming of the 1100 block of Gaskins, was charged with theft. A juvenile was also taken into custody.
Police said the burglary was witnessed by a neighbor, who called police. Following a description given to police, the traffic stop was initiated and the suspects were taken into custody.
Police were also able to arrest one suspect in a burglary occurring around 11 p.m. Saturday in the 2300 block of Herbert Street.
According to a police source close to the investigation, an anonymous caller reported a burglary in progress. The reporting person said the front door glass was broken out and four suspects were seen returning to a vehicle. Police stopped the vehicle matching the description of the getaway vehicle and three of the suspects fled on foot. A fourth suspect, Demetrius Hernandez, 20, of St. Louis, was apprehended. Hernandez has initially been charged with residential burglary, theft between $500 and $10,000 and resisting/obstructing an officer.
The case remains under investigation, according to police.
