Trivia Night to be held

MT. VERNON — People with cabin fever from a long and cold winter will have an opportunity to get out and enjoy a fun night while contributing to a worthy cause on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The third annual Trivia Night will be held at 7 p.m. that evening at West Salem Trinity United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. Proceeds from the event will benefit Lifeboat Alliance.

“The importance of this event is the homeless shelter needs our support. It is serving a great need in our community,” said organizer Gayle Shelton. “People need to remember it’s not just a one time gift. We need to keep supporting it.”

Approximately 12 teams competed in last year’s event, with participants

raising $3,800. The proceeds were matched with a $2,500 donation from an anonymous donor. The proceeds from this year’s event will also be matched, Shelton said.

She said the trivia night will include questions on arts and literature, geography, history, science and sports.

Some of the questions that could be asked during the competition include:

After an absence of millennia, the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in which city? Answer: Athens. In November of 1991, racist David Duke unsuccessfully ran for Governor in what state? Answer: Louisiana. And, on Feb. 18, 1970, the Chicago Seven were acquitted of all major charges. What were they charged with? Answer: Demonstrating disrupting during the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago.

“Some people have the mistaken idea you have to be smart to come to Trivia Night. The trivia we have is fun, and think they will have a good time if they come,” she said.

No prizes will be awarded, participants play for bragging rights only.

Walk-ins are welcome. If individuals do not have a team one will be assigned.

Reuben sandwiches made by Ed O’Rourke, cookies and soda will be available to purchase.

Interested parties may contact Shelton at 755-9302 or the church at 242-4755 to register. You may also contact Emily Martin at emily.martin@walgreens.com.
