Activities to ring in the New Year

---- — MT. VERNON — Jefferson County community members looking for places to ring in the new year on Tuesday night will have various choices.

The Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge according to a spokesman for the Elks, the club will open from 11a.m. on Tuesday to 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

The club will serve dinner specials from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on New Year’s eve. Dinners include 12 ounce and 16 ounce ribeye steaks, chicken ala oscar and blackened salmon. Each meal can be ordered with sides such as salads and potatoes. Members of the lodge may invite their own guest(s).

The local band “Don’t Mind Us” will be the entertainment for the new year’s celebration at American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. according to Bill Smith, a post spokesman. The club will be open from noon New Year’s Eve to 1 a.m. Wednesday. The band is set to begin at 8 p.m. This event is free and open for the public to attend.

Carl Bundy, of Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge 755, stated the lodge will not be having a dinner or entertainment on New Year’s eve. The lodge’s regular business hours are 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily.

At least one area church has reported it will be observing New Year’s eve with special activities.

The youth group at Bluford First Baptist will have a “fun night” from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday. Participants are encouraged to bring finger foods and board games.

No other churches have reported their scheduled events for the upcoming holiday.
