MT. VERNON — Commercial construction in the city got a $2.1 million boost in December with work starting on the Times Square Mall renovation of spaces for Hobby Lobby and Big Lots.
Permits for the work were issued early in the month, with the Hobby Lobby project estimated to cost $1.2 million and the Big Lots renovation estimated to cost $935,000.
Other commercial projects permitted for the month were:
n Steak & Shake, 130 N. 44th St., to replace a sign at an estimated cost of $18,500; and
n Corinthian Baptist Church, 1026
Newby, to place a sign at an estimated cost of $5,000.
Two permits were issued for residential projects. The first to Jeff and Susie Schmidt, 1011 Blueberry Hill, to construct a new home at an estimated cost of $292,000; and the second to Scott Piercy, 1807 Brownsville Rd., for a new room addition.
Demolition permits were issued to:
n Good Samaritan Hospital old building at 605 N. 12th St., for demolishing the additions, the hospital proper, Mitchell Hall and the former chapel;
n St. Mary Catholic Church, to demolish a house at 1500 Harrison St.;
n James Chow, to demolish a house at 1001 N. 27th St.; and
n James Merriman, to demolish houses at 1528 Perkins Ave., 1604 Perkins Ave., and 1600 Perkins Ave.
