Taste of St. Mary returns

MT. VERNON — Jefferson County residents suffering from cabin fever have an opportunity to get out this weekend to support a parochial school.

The third annual Taste of St. Mary will be held in the St. Mary School Gym, with serving beginning at approximately 6:45 p.m. following evening mass.

“It’s a neat, adult social mixer for people who are tired of the bad weather and seeing friends after being in the house for several days,” said Brett Heinzman, St. Mary School principal and organizer of the event. “Last year, we were able to raise about $10,000. It was a sold out event and it was just fabulous.”

Heinzman said about 20 vendors have signed up to provide food samplings for those attending. Prizes will be awarded to the best overall food, best meat, appetizer and dessert, and the best decorated table. Winning teams will receive IGA gift cards.

“That’s our way of supporting Borowiak’s IGA, which has sponsored the event since it began,” Heinzman said.

Last year, there were 23 vendors, and Heinzman says although there are fewer vendors this year, it’s a dilemma either way.

“With more vendors, you have more food. With fewer vendors, you have more space. That’s not a bad thing either,” he said, adding the number of vendors may go up by Saturday.

Advance tickets for $10 are available at the church and school, Borowiak’s, Ford Square and Schmidt Chevrolet. By purchasing tickets in advance, participants receive an extra three tickets to spend at vendor booths. Tickets are $10 each at the door, equalling 10 tickets.

“We will also have a silent auction going on during the evening and live entertainment,” said Heinzman, who said Ronnie Lee Finkbinger will be playing music, starting at 6 p.m.
