39th Scholastic Art Awards to begin

MT. VERNON — Cedarhurst Center for the Arts will be presenting the 39th installment of the Scholastic Art Awards on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Sarah Sledge, Cedarhurst director of communications, said the submissions have all been received and the judging has already been done for the exhibit. Staging and installment of the pieces will begin next week.

The show was open to seventh through 12th grade students in 28 southern Illinois counties. Over 450 works of art were entered this year and 209 works will receive an award and be part of the upcoming show.

Five judges reviewed all the work and selected winners in various categories, including the American Vision Award nominee, Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention certificates. There will also be a winner of the John R. and Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation Administrative Counselor Scholarship. Works from the top winners from the regional category will be sent to New York for the national competition.

Submissions from this year include work from junior and senior high school art departments from Anna, Jonesboro, Belleville, Carbondale, Carterville, Cobden, Edwards County, Herrin, Johnston City Joppa, Kell, Marion, Mt. Carmel, Mt. Vernon, Valmeyer, Waltonville and Waterloo.

An award ceremony will be held at the close of the exhibit on Feb. 10. The presentation will begin at 3 p.m. in the Mitchell Museum Performance Hall. Joe Dodd, a 1997 Scholastic Art Award Gold Key Award winner, will be the guest speaker during the ceremony.

A member preview reception for all new gallery exhibitions will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Jan. 12. Non-member admission is $5.
