MT. VERNON — —
The latest installment of the Classic Kids Matinee series will feature the film “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
The matinee series is held at Granada Center for the Performing Arts, and has been offering local children the chance to have a free screening of children’s movies since Jan. 2009.
“We’re in the middle of our season, which runs from October through May,” said David Lister, Granada board member. He added that the patronage of local banks and hospitals helps to keep the events free for local kids. “It’s one of the service things we do at the Granada.”
Lister said the last movie screening, held immediately after the Mt. Vernon Christmas Parade, drew close to 200 people.
“One of our goals is to keep these free for adults to come in with their kids,” he said. “They are making new memories there. So many kids saw their first movie there, and it’s happening again. It’s going quite well.”
The movie will be screened at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
“Inspired by the beloved children’s book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain,” according to the film’s website, cloudywithachanceofmeatballs.com.
The 2009 animated film features the voice talents of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell and Mr. T, according to the Internet Movie Database.
A drawing for a $50 savings bond will be held before the movie begins. The event is sponsored by Peoples National Bank, Lister said.
All of the movie screenings are free and children must be accompanied by an adult. There will also be small concessions available for $1.
The movie will begin at 2 p.m. Doors will open half an hour before each movie is scheduled to begin.
