Three Mt. Vernon residents die in accident

WOODLAWN — — Three Mt. Vernon residents were killed in a two-vehicle accident early Thursday morning on Interstate 64.

The accident happened shortly before 3 a.m. on Interstate 64 at the Woodlawn exit.

Killed were the driver of the SUV, 51-year-old James Watt, his sister, 57-year-old Roberta Jones, and cousin 52-year-old Delorise Jones.

Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks said he pronounced the victims dead at 3:21 a.m. He said the SUV, which was eastbound, was bumped by a Camaro. The driver of the car has not been identified, but was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.  The driver told law enforcement officers that he fell asleep.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.

Marks said the SUV flipped multiple times and went down a short embankment.

Watt's body was taken to Newell Funeral Home; his sister and cousin were taken to Hughey Funeral Home.
