Shooting victim dies at hospital

Police were called to a report of a shooting at 328 S. Third St., at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Initial reports indicate a man called to report he had been shot and hung up from the 911 call, with no other details available for responding emergency personnel. Police entered the mobile home to find a man had been shot. At this time there has been no reports released on whether the wound was accidental, intentional or inflicted by a second person.

Police were able to secure the scene of the incident shortly after arrival by using a shield to enter the home. The name of the victim and other details have not been released by the Mt. Vernon Police Department and the incident is still under investigation.

The victim of an apparent self-inflicted shooting incident has died at Crossroads Community Hospital.

The victim, 64-year-old James Rector, died as a result of his injury — a gunshot wound to the stomach, according to Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks. Marks said the fatal gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Rector was pronounced dead at 5:18 p.m. He had been taken in for surgery and died in an operating room at the hospital, authorities reported.

Police and emergency services personnel responded to a report of a shooting victim at 328 S. Third St. shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Initial scanner reports indicated the victim called 911 to report he was shot and then hung up the phone, and did not pick up after dispatchers tried to call him back.

The Mt. Vernon Police Department is investigating the incident.
