Olympic gymnast keynote speaker

A well-known U.S. Olympic gymnast, Shannon Miller, will be the keynote speaker at the eighth annual Healthy Woman celebration.

The event will be held Tuesday, May 6 at the Holiday Inn.

A vendor exposition, featuring many businesses that are teaming with Crossroads Community Hospital to bring this program to the area, will be held in the atrium from 5 to 6:15 p.m. A sit-down dinner in the ballroom will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by the keynote address.

Miller has won an astounding 59 international and 49 national competition medals. She is the only U.S. gymnast to win two World All-Around titles and she is the first American female to medal in the individual all-around of a non-boycotted Olympics. Her tally of five medals (two sliver, three bronze) at the 1992 Olympics was the most medals won by a U.S. athlete in any sport. At the 1996 Games, she led the "Magnificent Seven" to the U.S. Women's first ever team gold and for the first time for any American gymnast, she captured gold on the balance beam. She is the only female athlete to be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame — twice — as an individual in 2006 and team in 2008.

"We see this as a fantastic opportunity to bring a top-notch speaker, motivator and role model to our community," stated Finny Mathew, chief executive officer of Crossroads Hospital. "We encourage men and women of all ages to join us and not miss this chance to hear Shannon. Her story is just phenomenal."

Miller launched her company, Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women, along with her series of fitness books, cookbooks and fitness DVDs in July 2010. In 2011, she launched the Shannon Miller Walk-Fit program: an online tracking and incentive program.
