SESSER — The northbound lanes of Interstate 57 were closed for nearly eight hours Tuesday following a five-vehicle accident, including an unmarked Illinois State Police vehicle.
According to information from ISP, the accident happened at 3:35 p.m. at mile post 79.5, south of Ina and north of the Sesser exit.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by a traffic reconstruction officer.
Initial reports indicate the SUV occupied by the state trooper caught on fire. The trooper was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There was one additional person injured with non-life threatening injuries, police report.
The northbound lanes of the interstate were closed until about 11 p.m. Tuesday. Reports also indicate the southbound lanes were shut down for about an hour following the crash.
ISP had not released any further information on the accident as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.
