---- — WEST FRANKFORT — An elderly Mt. Vernon man was ticketed by Illinois State Police when his vehicle collided with an Illinois Department of Transportation truck.
According to ISP, Robert Venturi, 79, rear-ended the IDOT truck in the northbound lanes of Interstate 57, near West Frankfort, shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The IDOT truck was assisting with traffic control for a lane patching operation to repair potholes. The truck was stationary in the left lane with the truck’s lights and arrow board activated. Venturi’s SUV struck the rear end of the crash attenuating device connected to the IDOT truck causing major damage to his SUV and the attenuator.
Both northbound lanes of I-57 were closed for about 50 minutes as the accident was documented and cleared, police said. While both lanes were closed traffic was diverted off the interstate at Exit 65. Both lanes were reopened around 3 p.m. to other travelers.
Venturi, who was transported to a local hospital with incapacitating injuries and subsequently flown to a regional hospital, was ticketed on charges of violating Scott’s Law and failure to wear a seat belt.
The driver of the IDOT truck, 59-year-old Billy M. Reed of Benton, was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
