Street project to get underway

MT. VERNON — The city council will be presented with bids for the 34th Street road project during its meeting on Monday.

“We opened six bids, and the winning one is from Guinzy Construction for $1.9 million,” said Ron Neibert, city manager. “We expect to be able to get under construction as soon as the water project for the street is finished.”

The project, which is a continuation of the South 34th Street project completed last year from Peach Street to Veterans Memorial Drive, includes a re-alignment of the intersection at Veterans Memorial Drive, then widening and putting in a curb and gutter roadway to Harlan Road. In addition, the project includes putting a street — temporarily dubbed Samaritan Way — from South 34th Street to Good Samaritan Regional Health Center.

The water line project for the project has been awarded for construction and is expected to take about two weeks to complete once weather allows, Neibert said.

The estimated cost budgeted for the roadway project was $2,429,874, with the specific low bid from Guinzy Construction of Ashley coming in at $1,999,984.03. Other bids received were from Sierra Bravo Contractors of Sesser at $2.0 million; E.T. Simonds of Carbondale at $2.06 million; Baxmeyer Construction of Waterloo at $2.175 million; George Jones Excavating of Marion at $2.42 million; and DMS Contracting of Mascoutah at $2.45 million.

Neibert said the construction will start within 30 days of the bid award if awarded on Monday. The project is slated for completion 120 days from construction start or May 24, whichever is less.

In other business, the council will:

n Present a plaque to the Officer of the Year;
