INA — A two-vehicle traffic crash on Interstate 57 at mile post 83.5 has claimed the life of a Vandalia man.
According to the Illinois State Police, Germi R. Lane, 32, of Vandalia was fatally injured in the accident, which happened at 1:17 a.m. on Friday.
The driver of a second vehicle, Thomas T. McGuire, 39, of Benton, was treated and released for minor injuries, according to the ISP.
Both drivers were traveling southbound on I-57 with McGuire in front and in the right lane. ISP reports Lane approached the rear of McGuire’s vehicle at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass in the left lane, and in the attempt, sideswiped McGuire causing his vehicle to slide sideways and come to a rest on the right shoulder. Lane continued on to strike the guardrail on the right side of the road. After striking the guardrail, Lane’s vehicle rolled over and came to a rest on its side in the tree line.
Lane, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected and pinned beneath the Jeep he was driving, which caused fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner.
