MT. VERNON — Jefferson County Development Corporation is searching for a new executive director.
Mary Ellen Bechtel has announced she will be leaving the economic development organization effective March 31.
“This wasn’t something I planned,” Bechtel said. “JCDC is good, a wonderful organization and I wasn’t looking for another position. Working with the city and the county is wonderful. It’s an exciting time to be in economic development in Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County.”
Bechtel said an opportunity came her way to join SSM Healthcare as the director of strategy and marketing.
“When the opportunity showed up, I felt like I should take it,” Bechtel said. “It’s a bigger corporation with lots of opportunity.”
Bechtel has been with the JCDC since its organization in 2006. The organization was created as a public/private organization made up of area industry representatives, economic development allies and local government representatives.
Prior to the JCDC, Bechtel served as the assistant city manager, where economic development was one of her main focuses. She was involved with the creation and implementation of the switch from city economic development to the JCDC model.
“I will continue to be a big supporter of the JCDC,” Bechtel said. “It’s easy for anyone to be a partner and I can move into that role.”
