Quilt and craft show planned

TEXICO — An organization affiliated with Donoho Prairie Christian Church will be conducting a fundraiser this weekend to help the church reach its goal in paying for a new building.

The Donoho Prairie Quilters will host the quilt and craft show and barbecue fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The church is in rural Texico — six miles east of Kell or from Illinois 15, east of Mt. Vernon to Harmony Lane, then 10 miles north to Exchange Road.

“We did our first quilt show about five years ago and it was a big success,” said church spokeswoman Deann Sager. “Now we have a new building so we’ve expanded to a quilt and craft show. Our proceeds from the barbecue fundraiser will go toward finishing this new building.”

Sager said church members have been working on various phases of the New Life Family Center for about five years.

“Already our building is being put to good use by people throughout the whole community. It’s used for blood drives, wedding receptions, basketball and volleyball games, youth meetings and family reunions,” she added.

The Donoho Prairie Quilters — an active group of quilters who meet each Wednesday at the church — will have over 150 quilts on display. Most of these quilts are locally made and some have been passed down from generation to generation.

“Our goal is to have 200 quilts,” said member Carolyn Green. “It largely depends on how many (members) bring them in. We’re going to have them done by today (Friday).”

The quilters and other church members have assisted with fundraising efforts by selling food at the Midwest Herb and Garden Show for several years.

“We’ve had several barbecue dinners, too,” Green said.

The craft show will be held in the gym. Members will be selling smoked pork barbecue sandwiches, homemade soups, pies, cakes, etc., during the quilt and craft show.
