High school to host design forum today

MT. VERNON — The public will get its first look at what the new Mt. Vernon Township High School could look like today with a public forum, the first of two.

Results of a student body survey about the new school construction are expected to be presented today as well, said MVTHS Principal Wes Olson last week.

The survey was launched online last week at MVTHS to receive student input on the new building, scheduled to be built in 2013. It will replace the existing campus, which first opened in 1905.

Olson said current students bring a unique perspective to those discussions and that their input will carry equal weight.

“It’s going to take a lot of voices and lot of people and a lot of time to make it happen, and the student voice is an integral part of that,” Olson said. “Student perspective is most important, and I’m excited to see their comments.”

The 18-question survey represents the first formal step to engage students in the process, though some teachers have incorporated the building project within their classrooms, Olson said.

There will be afternoon sessions from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and evenings sessions from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. for each forum. General sessions will provide a concept and design overview and breakout sessions will focus on four areas.

The breakout sessions include:

    n Discussion of indoor and outdoor physical education and athletic facilities;
