---- — MT. VERNON — The JC Jets group hopes to raise about $2,000 from its upcoming Haunted Fundraiser, which will feature a scary, quarter-of-a-mile walk through the woods.
And while this is the first time the Jets are attempting a fundraiser of this sort, organizers are optimistic about its success.
“It’s just a good, spooky time, a good scare,” said Linda Austin, director of the JC Jets. “The proceeds support our sports and activities.”
The JC Jets is an adult nonprofit group made up of disabled athletes working toward the Special Olympics. It is based in Jefferson County, but its members compete in other locations as well.
The group consists of a variety of teams, including those for softball, basketball, cheerleading, track and field, bowling, and starting next year power-lifting. In all, 76 athletes belong to the group and the number continues to grow.
In addition, the Jets give back to the community by lending support to organizations like the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club, and Lifeboat Alliance.
“Our goal is friendship, trust, companionship, sports, and activities,” Austin said.
The Haunted Fundraiser will take place on four nights only — Oct. 11 and 12, and Oct. 18 and 19 — in a wooded area outside Mt. Vernon.
To reach the site, take Highway 37 north from Mt. Vernon to Idlewood Road and turn east. Then cross the one-lane wooden bridge and continue driving north. There will be signs posted.
A “Little Scare” walk will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on both Saturdays of the fundraiser: Oct. 12 and 19. This walk is for smaller children and will not be as scary.
The “Full Scare” walk occurs on all four nights starting at 7 p.m.
Featured along the trail will be actors in scary costumes, frightening scenes, and a maze at the end. The attractions are designed by Dark Moon Haunted Entertainment, which is co-owned by Lu Piper and Kenny Perrin.
“I hope they have a great time, whether they’re scared or they laugh,” Piper said. “We just want them to have a good time and come out and enjoy Halloween and raise money for a good cause.”
Tickets for the JC Jets Haunted Fundraiser are $6 per person. However, if you bring the event’s flier with you, you’ll get $1 off the ticket price.
Since this is an outdoor event, organizers urge the public to dress for the weather.
